Daily Grounding

It's so easy for our days to feel hectic, disjointed, chaotic, overwhelming, and exhausting. We live in a world of hustle, endless responsibilities, activities, work, family duties, among other day to day components. Even when many of those items are fun or "stress-free" it doesn't take much to reach the end of the day desperate for a break.

I have spent years of my life navigating this endless cycle, and something that I have found to be a huge lifesaver is one or two tasks that become engrained in every single day. For me, those activities are journaling and walking. Neither of these have to be lengthy or complex, but they are powerful regardless.

I specifically practice gratitude journaling, that I will likely reference many times! Every morning, as soon as my alarm goes off I pull out my cute journal and colorful pens. Anything is more enjoyable with fun colors! Some days I am still half asleep while I do this, so my journal entry may be short and sweet. Other days it's longer and deeper. For me, this is very faith based and I specifically thank God for any list of blessings that immediately comes to mind. I started doing this over ten years ago, when I heard a sermon talk about being unable to feel anxious and worship or practice gratitude at the same time. I was in a season of desperation. It took me years for this to become an integral routine in my day, week, and life. I firmly believe that there is always something to be thankful for! I love the summer and hot weather so much; so in the winter I frequently write about being thankful for the cold to allow my favorite days and season to be that much more special. I know it sounds cheesy, and believe me, I have felt that way too. I can confidently say that it will change your way of thinking and general mindset. I dare anyone to try gratitude journaling for one week, even if you only write 3 things you're grateful for.

Walking is also extremely significant for me. I love beginning my day with both journaling and walking, but there are times when this occurs more in the evening, or a short walk in the morning and night. My pursuit of walking also began years ago, primarily out of body image issues and wanting to maintain my weight. I didn't love it, I honestly dreaded it, but I forced myself to continue. I have always struggled with countless stomach and GI issues, and over time I realized how powerful walking can be for my physical health. Now it is a treasured time of my day, where I listen to my favorite podcasts and decompress.

Regardless of what chaos each day brings me, I know that these two simple activities can do wonders with keeping me grounded. They can be done from essentially any location, so traveling is no excuse! I would love to hear anything that you include in your day to keep you feeling grounded, with your feet firmly planted!
