Be The Sunshine

Updated: Sep 12, 2023

“You’re so bright!”

I hear this comment at least a dozen times every week, from individuals across a variety of ages and settings. Now anyone who knows me personally will agree that 99% of the time I am dressed in bright vivid colors, from head to toe. However, this comment is not always in direct correlation with my wardrobe or accessories. One of my life mottos was said by Lilly Pulitzer herself - “Be the sunshine”. I strive to spread joy and brightness everywhere I go. Sometimes this can be achieved through a smile, kind words, or a cheerful hello. It’s also amazing the impact that a bright physical appearance can have, especially when it is a direct reflection of your internal glow. Think about it, do most people feel happier on a gloomy dark day or when the sun is shining and flowers are blooming? Obviously there are always exceptions, and I am all for doing what makes you most comfortable, but for me that is always going to be radiating with bright colors.

It’s interesting to hear the follow up reactions and comments from strangers. They often say “you make me smile, you’re such a bright light, I would have never thought of wearing that” etc. Color can feel scary and intimidating. You certainly don’t have to jump into wearing neon! Start small and notice the effects. One day I was getting my nails done in my typical rainbow fashion, on this particular day I was doing ombre pink shades. I was seated next to a woman who was trying to decide between several pinks, and she commented how much she loved my choices. We began talking and she shared with me that she had recently relocated to the area to care for her dying father. I was able to empathize with her and discuss the loss of my own dad a year ago. By the end of our conversation, she shed some tears and I’ll never forget her words. She said “I would have never thought of doing different nail polish colors, but seeing yours brings such a smile to me during such a sad time. I’ll always remember you as the happy pink friend!”

Be the sunshine friends, you never know who is watching and absorbing your light!
